Thinking of retirement living?

As Scotland’s population ages, with over 1.3 million people expected to be over 65 within the next ten years, attitudes towards later life are shifting.

Independence remains a priority, but so does the need for connection and community. While staying in our own homes is still the preferred choice, for many it doesn’t always provide the balance people are looking for leading more individuals to explore new models of retirement living.

While private retirement developments are not currently as prevalent in Scotland as other parts of the country, their demand is undoubtedly on the rise as the benefits they offer appeal.

One such development is Waterside in Dargavel, Bishopton, a collection of luxury one and two bedroom energy efficient apartments with lots of additional benefits.

Features include an onsite House Manager, during working hours, who will lead a programme of activities within a Communal Lounge and where residents can relax and meet friends. Visitors can also arrange to stay within a guest suite and for peace of mind each apartment is fitted with a 24-hour emergency call system.

However, it’s not just the bricks and mortar that are attracting people to such developments.  It’s as much as the emotional benefits they offer, with people drawn by the social community, the safety and security, convenience and reduced maintenance.   Above all, it enables people to enjoy continued independence with a choice over the level of support they want.

And with research claiming that retirement community residents lead healthier and happier lives than their counterparts, it may be a door worth opening.
